At the Prince of Wales Skating Club Annual General Meeting a new executive was elected. Kim French takes over as President, and the club thanks Christine Morgan for her leadership of the club for the past three years. We also thank our departing executive members, in particular Susan Thistle who has been on the board for over 10 years, with four years as president. There are some vacant positions on the executive, so please contact us if you are interested in helping run the club.

Awards and Hall of Fame

At the Skate Newfoundland & Labrador Awards banquet, Dylan Short was named competitive Athlete of the Year. The late Joe Chapman (one of our club’s founders) and Agnes Thistle (club volunteer for over 40 years) were inducted into the SCNL Hall of Fame. The club was named to the Skate Canada CanSkate Challenge Hnour roll in recognition of the growth of our Canskate programme this year.

Ice Show

The club’s  ice show “An Olympic Tribute” was a great success, featuring some great skating and presentation of the annual awards. The Progamme Assistant of the year award went to Sarah-Jane Downton, and the PA award of excellence to Nicole Burt and Yvonne Chan. The CanPowerskate Program Assistant of the Year Award went to Chad Carter. The John Hall volunteer award recipient was Ruth Noel. Cathy Russell from Bank of Montreal presented BMO Spirit of Canskate Medals to Jena Dyer and Sarah Pace; and the BMO Canskater of the Year Award to Anna Carter. The Olivia Burke Memorial CanPowerskater of the Year award was presented to Ryan Maher.

Junior Provincials

Congratulations to our skaters who competed at  the Junior Provincial Championships in Clarenville this weekend and earned the Thistle Shield for club with most points, along with twelve medals. The Thistle Shield was presented to the section by the club seven years ago to honour the achievements of Agnes Thistle, long time club member, and this is the first time the club has won the award. In Saturday’s results Laura Murray won a gold in Canskate 5 – 7 years, and Gillian Stevens a bronze in Canskate 5- 8 years. Maria Downey finished 6th in CanSkate 6-7  years.  Taylor Druken won gold in Prepreliminary 1- 7 years with Serna Piercey silver. Ashley Stringer won gold and Katrina-Lynn Picco placed third in Prepreliminary 1 – 8 years.

On Sunday Amber Boutcher and Mikayla Downey won gold in preliminary 9 and younger, with Jenny Biles silver, Lauren Woodruff bronze, Grace Clarke 4th and Catherine Power 6th. Janel Hancock placed 5th in Preliminary 10 years. Emma Murray won gold in pre-preliminary 1 – 9 years, and Erin McKinnon bronze in pre-preliminary 1- 10 years.

Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Synchronized Skating Championships

6 teams- 5 golds, 1 silver!

The club had an amazing competition with  all six teams medalling. five of those teams won gold – Synergy (Intermediate), Princelles (Novice), Princettes (Juvenile), Pop Stars (Elementary), and Popsicles (Beginner). Insync (Adult) won silver.

Provincials

February 10th, 2010

The 2010 Lamontagne Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Provincials was held February 12-14, 2010 in Gander.  The club had a very successful event, with 15 medals. Notably Ashley Morgan, Maggie Walsh, Dylan Short, Kayla Kennedy and Sandy Walsh won Provincial Championships. Photos now on-line below.

Atlantic Regional Synchro

January 31st, 2010

The club’s Intermediate synchro team Synergy competed in the Atlantic Regional Synchro Championships in Riverview New Brunswick.  As single entrants they automatically qualify for Canadian Nationals by taking part but had an excellent skate scoring 46.12 in their first skate, and 44.45 in the second.

Synergy are operating the canteen at Feildian Gardens on Saturdays, and selling tickets on a gold bangle to raise funds for their travel. Synergy thank Avalon Ford, Canadian Tire (Kelsey Drive) and the Avalon Region for their support.

BMO Canadians and Junior Nationals

Several club skaters and volunteers traveled to London, Ontario to take in Canadians. Club member Corey Sutherland  acted as a technical specialist at Junior Nationals at the same venue.

Family and Fun Skate

There was an excellent turn-out at the club’s annual family and fun skate at Jack Byrne arena. following the family skate, 27 skaters  showed off their competitive programmes, nd Synergy premiered their programme for the year.
