On behalf of the Prince of Wales Skating Club, I would like to welcome current and new members to the 2011-12 season. This year is a very busy one with many of our programs full, while others are near capacity. Skate Canada’s mission is to provide Canadians the opportunity to participate in skating throughout ones’ lifetime for fun, fitness and achievement. It is our hope that we can relay the same message by sharing the enjoyment of this sport through the programs offered by our dedicated coaches. The club currently utilizes four rinks throughout the area, which enables all participants the opportunity to actively enjoy the sport of skating.
I would also like to thank the many volunteers who make things happen and especially our Club Administrator, Barbara Kirkland who manage the daily needs and concerns of the club. We are a large club with a big operation of programs that requires time and energy to ensure all is running smoothly. We ask for the patience during registration time, as a high volume of applications are being processed at once.
Again, enjoy the year and see you at the rink!

Prince of Wales SC member Julia Mercer is “jumping” into the next phase of her figure skating career. While summer training at St. Leonard SC located in Montreal, Julia was asked to attend a pairs skating tryout. Much to her delight, Julia was chosen to be the new partner for Spencer Buchanan. Spencer is from the Central Ontario Section and trains full-time at St. Leonard SC. Given only three weeks to prepare, Julia and Spencer successfully passed their Novice Pairs Competitive skating requirements. Coached by Richard Gauthier and Bruno Marcotte who both also coach the Canadian Pair Senior Champions, Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, the new pairs team will represent the Province of Quebec in the Novice Pairs discipline. Julia and Spencer will train full-time at the St. Leonard Skating Club.
Not forgetting her love of singles skating Julia will also represent the Prince of Wales SC and Newfoundland & Labrador in the Junior women Competitive category this upcoming season. Julia will be the first Junior women competitor to represent our province since 2005. Julia will train competitive singles at the St. Leonard Skating Club and be coached by Nathalie Martin and her coaching staff. Two of Nathalie’s current students include Amelie Lacoste and Myrianne Samson, both members of the Canadian Senior Ladies Figure Skating Team and both qualifiers at the 2011 World Figure Skating Championships.
Julia is very excited to share the ice with two of Canada’s elite female Single skaters along with the Canadian Pairs Champions. She is looking forward to this year’s Singles and Pairs competitive season.
Congratulations and best wishes for a successful season, Julia
