CanSkate
CanSkate – Canada’s learn-to-skate program – is Skate Canada’s flagship program that teaches skaters of all ages the fundamental movements of skating, with a focus on fun and continuous movement taught by certified NCCP coaches and assisted by trained program assistants.
It is geared to participants aged five and up, but can be adapted for any age. The Club offers PreCanSkate sessions for younger children (aged 3 to 5), a session specially designed for older beginning skaters (aged 11-17) and an adult session for older beginners. The CanSkate programme teaches fundamental skating skills like skating forwards, backwards, how to stop, turn, spin and jump. The skills are taught and emphasized through fun activities and continuous movement in small groups. Skills are assessed frequently, and there are many incentives available to reward participation. Badges are also awarded at each level. CanSkate graduates can progress on to other Skate Canada programs including the Starskate Programme, the Competitive Programme, CanPowerSkate or CanSynchroSkate.
Instruction is on a group basis, with at least two professional coaches on the ice, and sufficient programme assistants (older skaters aged 12 and up, usually participants in the Club’s junior-senior programme) to ensure a good coach to skater ratio. We limit numbers in general to a maximum of sixty (generally less) on the ice. Children learn at their own pace through badge levels. Skaters may join more than one skating session during the week (please ask about our reduced rate for multiple CanSkate sessions). HELMETS REQUIRED and GLOVES RECOMMENDED!
